Zhong Kui's fire-breathing and Zhong Kui dance are important and intimidating exorcism rituals in traditional Taiwanese folk customs. They are mainly used after the Ghost Festival to drive away lingering souls, for the completion of new temples, the commencement of construction, to express gratitude to the land, or to suppress haunted houses. Due to numerous taboos, the rituals are generally held at night, and only specific individuals can participate.
